Databricks buys Row Zero to make spreadsheets a governed surface for Genie
The acquisition gives Genie a familiar modeling interface while trying to keep permissions, lineage and agent actions attached to live enterprise data.
Databricks has acquired Row Zero and plans to make its spreadsheet interface a native part of Genie, its AI coworker for business teams. The company says the combination will let finance, operations, sales and marketing users move from conversational analysis into formulas, pivots, scenario models and visualizations without first exporting governed warehouse data into detached files. Financial terms were not disclosed in the announcement. Databricks announcement
The spreadsheet becomes part of the agent surface
Row Zero connects spreadsheets directly to live data sources and is designed to preserve each user’s permissions. Databricks says its integration will support automatic refreshes from authoritative sources, restrictions on exports, write-back and auditing of interactions. The intended governance stack is Genie Ontology, Unity Catalog and Unity Gateway rather than a separate spreadsheet copy with its own access model. Databricks announcement
That changes the shape of Genie. A chat answer can become a hands-on business model in the same product surface, while an agent can manipulate cells and formulas through Row Zero’s agent tools. Databricks argues that the familiar spreadsheet syntax and processing model make those agent actions interpretable and auditable to business users. Databricks announcement
Governance claims now face implementation tests
The acquisition addresses a real control gap: conversational analytics often ends with an export to Excel or Google Sheets, where lineage, refresh state and warehouse permissions can be lost. Databricks is promising to keep those controls attached as users pivot, model, collaborate and write results back. The practical tests will be whether export restrictions, row- and column-level policies, refresh semantics and write-back approvals behave consistently across Genie’s web, desktop and mobile clients.
The announcement says Row Zero will be available to all Databricks customers across major clouds and will continue to support data sources beyond Databricks. It does not give an availability date, packaging details or pricing. That means the acquisition is strategically significant but not yet a generally available product change customers can deploy today. Databricks announcement
For practitioners, the important shift is not merely “AI in a spreadsheet.” Databricks is trying to make the spreadsheet itself a governed execution and review surface for agents. If the promised controls survive the move from warehouse query to workbook formula and back again, Genie could reach business workflows that chat-only analytics tools do not. Until integration details and availability arrive, teams should treat that as the roadmap—not the current contract.
